Com mais de 200 milhões de álbuns vendidos em todo o mundo, o músico jamaicano Bob Marley, morreu em Miami no dia 11 de maio de 1981, 30 anos atrás, mas, apesar das homenagens em todo o mundo, seu legado perde força em seu próprio país.

Os rastafaris de Zâmbia se reuniram em Lusaka para "celebrar a vida" do ídolo que se tornou "a voz dos desfavorecidos" do mundo inteiro. Sua música "continua mantendo uma unidade que vai além de credos, raças, cores, fronteiras e culturas", disse à agência France Presse Brian Chengela, diretor da Jah Entrenainment.

Também serão realizadas apresentações transmitidas em programas de rádio ou televisão, como o documentário: "The Wailers: Catch a Fire", que mostra os bastidores da gravação deste álbum em 1972.

Trinta anos depois da morte do músico jamaicano, várias correntes musicais "apareceram a partir dos anos 1950, como o punk e o rock, que continuam existindo", explica a socióloga e pesquisadora da Universidade de Paris-Sorbonne, Anne Petiau.

Robert Nesta Marley ainda simboliza o protesto, a emancipação e a liberdade para muita gente de diferentes crenças, inclusive jovens, que descobriram a música de um astro que nasceu em um país pobre que era ouvida pelos pais e avós.

Os mais velhos "continuam ouvindo a música de sua juventude que os faz voltar àquele tempo", segundo Petiau.

Em termos gerais, a voz e a espititualidade de Bob Marley --como parte da cultura rastafari, que o apresentava como o apóstolo da cannabis-- transformaram o reggae na música dos desfavorecidos em vários lugares do mundo.

Assim é, por exemplo, na África, quando nos lembramos dos músicos Alpha Blondy e Tiken Jah Fakoli, um continente do reggae, como Bob Marley previa.

O pai do reggae nasceu no dia 6 de fevereiro de 1945 em Rhoden Hall, perto de Nine Miles, na paróquia de Saint Ann (Jamaica), de mãe jamaicana e pai inglês (oficial da Marinha que o músico não conheceu).

Morou no gueto de Trenchtown, em Kingston, e, em 1962, gravou seu primeiro single "Judge Not", no qual formou a banda "The Wailers" com Peter Tosh e Bunny Wailer.

Em 1966 se mudou para os Estados Unidos por razões financeiras. Lá conheceu Mortimer Planno, um jamaicano de origem cubana que o ensinou parte da cultura rastafari.

Depois de voltar à Jamaica nos anos 1960, gravou seu primeiro álbum com os Wailers no início dos anos 70. "Catch a Fire" e "Burnin" em 1973. Em 1974 gravou o primeiro álbum solo, "Natty Dread". Depois vieram "Rastaman Vibration" em 1976 e "Exodus" em 1977.

Em 1977, Bob Marley fez, com o "The Wailers", um grande show lendário durante o qual interpretou algumas músicas do álbum que acabava de gravar ("I Shot the Sheriff", "Lively Up Yourself", "Get Up, Stand Up", "Jamming", "No Woman No Cry", "Exodus" e "War").

Bob Marley continuou gravando discos até o fim de sua vida. "Survival", em 1979, e Uprising, em 1980, foram os últimos.

Hoje, o culto ao ídolo continua aquecendo a indústria da música, mas o compromisso político tende a se perder entre os jovens.

Nas ruas da capital da Jamaica, onde há um museu voltado para objetos e fotos do artista, a lenda de Bob Marley ainda é alimentada. Diariamente é oferecida uma excursão à Nine Miles, cidade natal do cantor, onde são vendidos suvenires de todos os tipos.

No entanto, o medo de que o artista se torne apenas mais um motivo comercial é o mesmo de que ele seja esquecido.

"Seu objetivo nunca foi comercial", explica o amigo Herbie Miller à agência France Presse. "O dinheiro não era a principal motivação" de Bob Marley.

As músicas do pai do reggae já tocam pouco na Jamaica. Miller afirma que "o Poder da Jamaica tenta suavizar" o lado comprometido de Bob Marley com as questões de liberdade e defesa dos oprimidos.

A Fundação Marley lamenta a "falta de eventos comemorativos dos 30 anos de morte do cantor", e afirma que sua música já não tem mais a mesma força.

Entra ano, sai ano, e a história se repete. Artistas consagrados da música jamaicana morrem muito cedo, a maioria antes de atingir a terceira idade.

Desta vez, a triste notícia que abalou os regueiros do mundo todo foi a morte do deejay e produtor Neville Beckford, mais conhecido como Jah Woosh.

Jah Woosh nasceu no ano de 1952 em Kingston, na Jamaica, e começou sua carreira de músico no início dos anos 70. Utilizando seu nome de batismo ao lado do grande amigo Reggae George, eles formaram a dupla Neville & George.

Em seguida, Jah Woosh passou a cantar em alguns sound systems da época e, em 1974, ele lançou o seu primeiro álbum auto-intitulado "Jah Woosh", para o produtor Rupie Edwards.

Nos anos seguintes, ele lançou uma série de álbuns que estabeleceram definitivamente o seu nome como um dos grandes deejays jamaicanos.

Álbuns como "Chalice Blaze", "Psalms Of Wisdom", "Dreadlocks Affair", "Lick Him With The Dustbin", "Religious Dread" e "Marijuana World Tour" fizeram grande sucesso na Jamaica e especialmente na Inglaterra.

No final da década de 70, Jah Woosh passou a produzir os seus próprios álbuns e singles, e também lançou trabalhos de outros artistas como Bim Sherman, Horace Andy, Mickey Simpson, Larry Marshall e seu amigo de longa data Reggae George.

A grande maioria de suas produções foi lançada através do seu próprio selo, Original Music. Nos últimos anos, Jah Woosh dividia o seu tempo entre a sua casa na Jamaica e seu estúdio em Londres, na Inglaterra.

Neville "Jah Woosh" Beckford morreu na última segunda-feira (21/02), em Londres, aos 58 anos de idade. Segundo pessoas próximas a Beckford, apesar de sofrer de câncer ele estava bem de saúde, e sua repentina morte foi um choque para seus amigos e familiares.
